Upaj farmer experience

The complete artifacts and detailed records behind the account. Current public references, original work and proposed designs retain their labels.

Detailed material

The problem

Day-14 and Day-30 retention had stayed flat for thirteen months. Monitoring a farm, checking mandi prices and finding relevant information were recurring tasks, but usefulness also depended on reaching them from a constrained phone.

Choose tasks worth repeating

We organised the revamp around observing the farm, checking mandi prices and finding relevant information. These are reasons to revisit a product; a visual refresh or an increased number of prompts would not by itself establish that usefulness.

The work brought monitoring, market information and a new notification structure into the experience. The records document that combined scope, rather than a tested comparison between these alternatives.

Make useful information reachable

Useful information still had to be accessible on constrained Android phones. Later portfolio material describes entry reducing from eleven steps to three, with attention to app size and cold-start behaviour. These are concrete access changes, not a separately measured onboarding-conversion result.

That same later material describes crop-cycle notification triggers. Notifications were a route back to a relevant task, alongside the content and experience work; they were not the sole product strategy.

Reported programme results

The career record reports improvements over the programme’s first three months. Several experience, content and communication workstreams changed together, so these are programme reports rather than controlled estimates of any one feature’s effect.

Start with the reason to return

For another retention problem I would begin with the task worth repeating, then inspect the effort between the user and that task. In Upaj, farm information, market prices and content gave that investigation a concrete starting point; lifecycle messages helped people reach it.

Content had a delivery decision

Rural creators and influencers contributed to the content library. Material longer than a minute used YouTube; shorter formats used a custom CDN. The decision connected content length and distribution to the mobile experience.

I coordinated the content and information work with design, engineering and lifecycle communication. The record does not provide a feature experiment showing that one content format or notification caused the retention change.

Device and entry evidence

The eleven-to-three-step entry change and app-size/cold-start work are recorded in later material. Historical before/after screens and the exact eight removed or deferred steps are not supplied. The case therefore explains the documented access problem without fabricating a screen sequence.

Monetisation remained in my remit, but no separate revenue outcome for the entry, content or notification changes is established.

Reference: adjacent farm-product capabilities

Farm OS monitoring and crop-health diagnosis are separate product studies. This historical capability map records their relationship to the broader farmer experience; it is not evidence of one shared deployed backend or a measured engagement effect from every component.

The table is retained as background. The engagement account concerns entry, useful tasks, content and return; crop datasets, model quality and sensing architecture belong with the related technical cases.

Connected product layers and their evidence boundaries
LayerDocumented capabilityConnection to the farmer journey
Capture and field contextOffline leaf-image capture; indoor IoT inputs; parcel-level GIS information for open fields.Different sources answer different questions. Offline image capture does not imply every sensor stream or map works offline.
Observation and monitoringIndoor growing conditions and open-field crop monitoring.Give the farmer a view of conditions; monitoring is distinct from autonomous physical control.
Diagnosis and domain knowledge500K+ reported images across 14 crops, curation/labels and agronomist review; crop-specific playbooks.Connect captured evidence to an understandable next step; dataset size is not diagnostic accuracy.
Conversational guidanceAn OpenAI API conversational layer is described in the crop-health account.Explain crop-specific guidance; the exact model version, prompts and production safety controls are not supplied.
Market and content utilityMandi prices, rural creators, YouTube for content over a minute and a custom CDN for shorter material.Support recurring decisions and format-appropriate distribution; current market freshness and provider APIs need separate evidence.
Lifecycle and device experienceNotification redesign; later source details on crop-cycle triggers, 11-to-3-step entry, app size and cold starts.Reach a relevant action on constrained phones; source versions do not isolate these changes’ effect.
Measurement and businessD14/D30 engagement, active users, CAC and session duration; platform monetisation remit.Review usefulness and economics separately. No revenue ledger or isolated feature-attribution result is supplied.

This is a sourced product-capability map, not a vendor architecture or claim that Priyam personally built each model, sensor or service.

What I would measure next — proposed

I would first reconstruct activation and repeat-use cohorts, then check whether improvements held across target phones and network conditions. Those are proposed follow-up questions, not historical experiment results.

Other self-reported programme measures in the career record are active users from 100,000 to 600,000, CAC falling 66% and average sessions from eleven to fifteen minutes. Active-user definitions, comparison periods and raw cohorts are unavailable. These figures are retained as source context, not promoted as headline proof.

Product question and proposed acceptance evidence
QuestionProposed evidenceExisting result boundary
Does entry reach useful work?Completion and abandonment through the simplified entry flow, segmented by phone/network and new-versus-returning users.11-to-3 steps is later-reported scope; no isolated conversion effect is supplied.
Does information stay useful?Timestamp/availability checks for farm and market information, plus observed next actions.A monitoring or mandi feature is documented; real-time freshness guarantees are not.
Do notifications help?Defined crop-stage cohorts, delivery/opt-out data and downstream useful-task completion.Notification redesign is part of the programme; a notification-only retention lift is not established.
Does capture recover safely?Low-end phone trials, interrupted connections, image retry behaviour and expert-reviewed guidance.Offline image/reconnection scope is documented; recovery rates and device benchmarks are unavailable.
Is acquisition economical?Channel cost and matched activation/retention cohorts with an explicit time window.66% lower CAC is source-reported without its cost baseline or channel mix.
Is recurring use growing?A specified active-user unit and D14/D30 denominator, cohort and relative-versus-point definition.100K→600K users, 50%/20% retention improvements and 11→15-minute sessions are separate programme reports.

Proposed measurement design; no new measured outcome, proprietary backend vendor or isolated causal effect is claimed.
